23 Police and Military/Scenario: Attacker pulls a hidden blade and tries to slash the Officer/Soldier across throat (Carotid). Breakdown: This technique is the exact opposite as the previous in terms of rotation and the directional axis. From the flinch I am using my L hand to grab the weapon side of my Attacker at the wrist and rotate away instead of upward. Think of this as a “Motor-Cycle Grip” in terms of which direction that you rotate the wrist. My R arm pulls/strikes the R arm of the Attacker forward (elbow should be facing you) while maintaining the pressure and rotation on your opponents wrist. The knife is stripped from the bad-guys hand at the base (pommel) using the web of your R hand between your thumb and index finger and pushing through in a straight line. Details: We have observed our own students over many years grabbing at the weapon arm under even the stress of practice tactics so as a result we have incorporated this due to it being an autonomic response ( hardwired not cognitive) that the body will use to protect itself by seeking out and attempting to control the threat. Notice that the fulcrum at the elbow is a bio-mechanical hinge that must be exploited especially involving edged weapons. Rather than just pulling the elbow forward think about striking it forward using the radial bones of your wrist (thumb side). Picture 3 shows that kicks can be delivered into the groin, knees or abdominal region of the Attacker to distract him and make controlling the arm easier. Safety: Aggressively rotating your partner’s wrist in either direction can (I have seen it happen) pop the wrist so be careful when practicing. When the pinky finger is in the top position the wrist lacks stability and structure. The rotator cuff is under pressure when the arm is bent (chicken wing) behind the back from 2 different directions: upwards towards the back of the head or pulling the hand AWAY from his back and towards you in what used to be called a “Hammer Lock.” UZIEL Fighting Systems 2014
