A few days ago , in one of the bay of Cabo de Palos , Spain , I could see these images of a diver ( in technical diving configuration – he was with a double tank ) alone walking through the bottom with fins in hand . The first reaction I had – God , what ’ s going on here ? Immediately I asked him if he was OK , he said OK and he continued his walk direction to the beach by the bottom . I was with my REC1 students , so my students obviously afterwards began to ask me what it was that we have seen . Of course , in the theoretical classes we talk a lot about the importance of maintaining good buoyancy and a good trim for several reasons , one of which is to be respectful to the environment , to be “ ocean friendly .”
What reasons did this diver have for walking in the background ? I have no idea . And the truth is that I don ’ t want to know it , because he has “ killed ” many underwater bugs along his way and in this case , he has no excuse . Yes , it ’ s just a bay , it is not a reservation area , but we should worry about marine life where we are intruders all time . In the same bay , thirty seconds before I saw the walking diver I saw some babies of octopus and moray . We are visitors who have come uninvited . So at every moment we should be aware and responsible for our actions .
Diving is fun ! Yes , but we have to have fun in common sense respecting the environment in which we find ourselves . When we have fun on the streets and if we have fun excessively – we get a penalty fee or attention from a cop , right ? Well , it ’ s a shame that there are no policemen under water , and since we are the lucky few we can enjoy the immensity of the world ocean , we are going to be our own policemen and take care of the environment in which we find ourselves .
H ace unos días en una de las calas de Cabo de Palos pude ver estas imágenes de un buceador ( en configuración de buceo técnico – llevaba un bibotella ) en solitario andando por el fondo con aletas en la mano . La primera reacción que tuve – hostia , ¿ qué está pasando aquí ? Enseguida le pregunté si estaba bien , me contestó que sí y siguió su caminata hacía la playa por el fondo . Yo iba de curso , entonces mis alumnos obviamente después me empezaron a preguntar qué era eso lo que hemos visto . Porque claro , en las clases teóricas hablamos mucho de la importancia de mantener una buena flotabilidad y un buen trimado por varias razones , una de las cuales es el ser respetuoso con el medio ambiente , ser “ ocean friendly ”.
¿ Qué razones tenía este buzo para andar por el fondo ? No tengo ni idea . Y la verdad es que no quiero ni saberlo , porque ha matado muchos bichos por el camino y en este caso en concreto no tiene excusa . Sí , es una cala , no es una reserva , pero no por ello nos tenemos que despreocupar por la vida marina donde somos unos intrusos . En esa misma cala , treinta segundos antes de ver al buzo caminante he visto una cría de un pulpito y una cría de una murena . Somos visitantes que hemos venido sin invitación . Entonces en cada momento deberíamos ser conscientes y responsables de nuestros actos .
Diving is fun ! Sí , pero tenemos que divertirnos dentro del sentido común respetando el medio en el que nos encontramos . Nosotros cuando nos divertimos en las calles y si nos “ pasamos ” de diversión – recibimos una multa o una atención de un policía , ¿ verdad ? Pues es una pena que bajo el agua no hay policías , y ya que relativamente no somos muchos los afortunados que podemos disfrutar de la inmensidad de las aguas del océano
