the new recreational 1 class – open water plus nitrox E very once in a while we try something that doesn’t work. That was the case with the UTD Recreational 1 class. Rec 1 was designed as “Open Water on Steroids,” an 8-day basic certification class that included multiple pool sessions, then ocean, then more pool, then more ocean. The goal was to combine Open Water with Essentials of Rec into the most comprehensive Scuba certification ever offered. Unfortunately, almost nobody took the class. Too much, too soon, it was purchased by spouses, boyfriends, girlfriends, and other friends of UTD divers who wanted the best for the people they knew. So when a few of our instructors started asking about an open water certification class that included Nitrox training, The New Rec 1 seemed like a perfect place to put it. RECREATIONAL 1 IS NOW OPEN WATER PLUS NITROX. This adds one day to the standard Open Water class to include Nitrox theory, safety, labeling, analyzing, etc. At least two of the open water dives must be on Nitrox, and the max depth is still 60’/18m.
