– UTD TECHNIQUES – Working with Students who are Uncomfortable in the Water 1. Use the building block technique when teaching. 3. Establish proper weighting – get the students neutrally buoyant in a bathing suit. 2. Start with the simplest thing...snorkel, no mask, no wetsuit, no tank, no BCD, nothing. Get them breathing with no mask first. 4. Teach buoyancy with the snorkel – after properly weighting a student, have them descend by exhaling. 5. Then add a regulator and have them descend and ascend by exhaling and inhaling.
