EXTREME SCUBA
MAKEOVER
By UTD Instructor Iñaki de Santos
Hello, my name is Iñaki Santos. I have
been a diving instructor since 1982
and I am an UTD instructor since
2013.
Throughout my career as an instructor I have tried to make my students
understand the importance of learning
good buoyancy and proper trim. The
UTD course, EXTREME MAKEOVER SCUBA, has given me the
tools to teach these principles to my
students in a simple and effective way.
The first EXTREME MAKEOVER
SCUBA course I taught in May 2013
had 6 students. I usually spend about 4
hours for theory and 4-5 hours of pool
practice. The first thing I do is pres-
day.” I have not paid one single dinner yet.
ent what UTD is and UTD´s philosophy.
I want my students to tell me what they
expect out of this course. Throughout the
different courses I have taught so far, all
students agree on one thing – that they
have seen UTD divers diving and they
want learn to dive like them. Most do not
believe that at the end of the day they will
be able to have the same trim or frog kick.
I always tell them: “I bet a dinner that
you’ll be able to have the same trim and
to do a good frog kick by the end of the
I think this course is the best possible introduction to the “UTD way.” Many of my students have fear
and insecurity about doing a UTD Essentials for starters, but since I have started teaching ESM first, I
no longer have that problem. My students now come to Essentials adequately prepared and convinced
about their training with UTD.
These are some of the views from my students:
