UTD Open Water Training
Using Zuba
One of the secrets we discovered in teaching Open Water is
the need to strip the diver down to the core of diving, basically eliminate the noise. This means remove the cylinders,
weights, wetsuits and so on, allowing students to experience
natural neutral buoyancy while breathing underwater. This
imprints muscle memory from day one of what it feels like to
be neutrally buoyant and how to achieve it without use of the
equipment.

But how do we go underwater without scuba equipment? This
is where Zuba became the perfect tool. Zuba (www.zubadiving.com) is a surface supplied hookah system that floats
the tank on the surface and feeds the air down to the diver
through a second stage. The hose is 25’/7m allowing you to
enjoy Zuba diving without the weight and clutter of traditional
scuba.
Zuba is not only a great tool for a Try Scuba class or a Kids’
program, but a required tool for UTD Open Water classes.
Zuba allows the new student to descend free of weights, tanks
and other noises...the first dive is clean and easy and successful. This also gives our instructors time to discover exactly
how much weight the students need and how to position the
weight to be in good horizontal trim.

The key is students
can attain excellent
buoyancy skills on
their first dive. Once
they achieve this we
can slowly add the
gear – scuba tank
and weights – and
watch them transition to comfortabe,
confident scuba
divers within the
course of a typical
4-day Open Water
class.
