WINGS OF DESIRE
14 September 6:30pm
Drama, Fantasy, Romance
2h 8min | Germany | 1987 | English subtitles
This film is a portrait of a still-very-much-divided
Berlin in the 1980s. It tells the tale of a guardian
angel who craves to be human after falling in love
with a melancholy trapeze artist. Described as a
‘visionary film about vision’ Wings of Desire was
released two years before the fall of the Berlin
Wall. It contains overt symbolism and commentary
from director Wim Wenders, and co-writers Peter
Handke and Richard Reitinger.
Wings of Desire is one of the top 50 highest
grossing foreign films to be released in the US. The
film captured the admiration of highbrow critics
and mainstream audiences like very few films
before or since its release.
Trivia bite: The black and white sequences were
shot through a one-of-a-kind filter (made from
a stocking belonging to the cinematographer’s
grandmother).
