Know the benefits of US Fireplace Dampers
A US fireplace damper is a protective door that obstructs the fireplace from the flue. The flue is
the chamber that carried the soot, smoke, and carbon monoxide gases up the chimney, and out of
the top. It is an ordinary mistake that people make, calling the damper a flue. The damper is
opened to gain access to the flue. A chimney damper is mainly made up of one or two materials.
The first material is steel. The other common material is cast iron. Cast iron is the best material
because of its slow rusting process. Steel may rust faster than cast iron.
The damper is situated in what is called the "throat" of the chimney. The throat is the place
among the firebox and the smoke chamber. There are three types of handles are common for
controlling the damper.
The first type of handle is known as a poker style handle. This type of handle needs taking a firepoker to physically push the door open. When open, the door is held in place by notches in the
chimney. In order to close the door, the poker is used to drive the US Fireplace Damper off of
the notches, and back down gently in the chimney.
The second type of handle is known as a "ratchet style handle." To open a damper with the aid of
a ratchet style handle, the person operating the handle must pull it towards them. This handle has
pivot points that permit the door to open little by little.
The third type is a rotary style handle. With this type of damper, there is a handle on the outside
of the fireplace that can be turned to open the door.
