History of Carnival
in the late 1700’ s slaves from Africa began to arrive in the city of Montevideo. The slaves and servants of other families were sad and without an identity. The people longed for religion, music, and their own land. The masters of the slaves allowed them to gather in certain locations. They needed something to let them feel free, the drums began to beat, and Carnival came to life!

The week of Carnival
Carnival is a national festival that is celebrated around the world. There are many important events throughout the celebration, but many of the main activities take place in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Carnival, officially, is only given two days out of the week, meant for celebration. Although Monday and Tuesday are the official holiday days, people celebrate all week; homes and streets decorated, stores closed, and everyone is ready to party. Preparing for Carnival begins months before the actual event, mostly in December of the year before. The department of culture plans most of the event.
