The Alpine Burger: I’m not sure what’s even on this one other than some kind of tangy mayo. I forget about them sometimes, so when I do order them, I get to have that “Oh, Yeah, I do like these” moment. The Big Boy Original: I love this burger. There’s an extra bit of history on this one. At one point, a certain other chain decided that the Big Boy original was too similar to one of their big sellers, so Big Boy reduced the size of their beef patty to 1/5lb. to avoid copyright issues. It’s a double decker burger with two beef patties, lettuce, cheese, and special sauce It’s good. It’s good enough that it frustrates me when I want to order other things. The Fries and Gravy: Fries and gravy is a pretty ubiquitous thing up here. We’re starting to see some Poutine around town, too. However, Big Boy seems to have found this perfect balance of salt on their fries and pepper in the gravy (a throwback to their KFC days) that make me want to eat this until my stomach hurts. The Pizza Burger Flying Style: Two pieces of bread pressed and toasted around a burger patty, cheese, and pizza sauce. This was the first thing I ever had from Big Boy. This is how they got my business forever. I don’t know what they put into that pizza sauce, but whatever it is, they had better not stop. The Poppers: I order these without hesitation, every time I go to Big Boy. They’re just cheddar and smaller chunks of jalapeno. As much as I do enjoy taking my life in my hands to navigate the minefield of molten cream cheese from other jalapeno poppers, sometimes it’s nice to just be able to enjoy them without fear of a trip to the ER for third degree cheese burns. 26 The Brown/ Purple Cow: We ordered one of each. I described them earlier in the article. If you’re still reading, and have not had either or both of these shakes, STOP READING AND GET IN THE LINE. I’m going to wrap this up be reiterating what a Diamond in the Rough we have here in Bismarck. It has a menu that is unique to its franchise, and does a fantastic job of preserving the drivein aesthetic from when it was built. Now, if you’ll excuse me, my never ending quest to find a good hot dog in Bismarck is calling me back to Big Boy to try a Coney Dog. 27
