NJ : How did the idea of Starlight Cinema get started ?
DD : I was in Los Angeles visiting a friend and attended a similar event called Cinespia . It was so cool and we wanted to bring something like that to Bismarck-Mandan .
NJ : Awesome ! So , who all is involved in the planning and development of it ?
DD : Starlight Cinema is presented by D & N Cinematics so we coordinate everything from the projector and film licensing to t-shirts and the beer vendor . We couldn ’ t make this happen without our awesome show night volunteers and the Sleepy Hollow staff .
NJ : What are the shows playing this summer and what times do they play ?
DD : We had our first show on June 9th with Back to the Future .
The rest of the dates are : August 11th - Labyrinth Sept . 8th - Napoleon Dynamite Sept . 30th - Rocky Horror Picture Show
NJ : Does it cost anything ?
DD : Ticket are $ 10 for adults , $ 8 for students and military and children 5 and under are free .
NJ : Did you do this last year ?
DD : 2016 is the inaugural year for Starlight Cinema .
NJ : How did you pick which movies to play ?
DD : To select the movies we took a poll in the office with people listing their favorite classic , crowdpleaser movies and narrowed it down from there .
NJ : What is your favorite movie ? :)
DD : I don ’ t have a favorite movie per se , I appreciate films of all types from weird B-movies to Hollywood blockbusters .
NJ : What are your goals for Starlight Cinema ? Where do you see this going in the future ?
DD : We would love to see this event grow and flourish to become an annual Bismarck- Mandan tradition . We ’ re hoping to see more and more people coming to the shows and really want it to be something everyone can enjoy for years to come . 2016 is our test run — seeing what works and what doesn ’ t , but if all goes as planned we will make continue to put on Starlight Cinema .
NJ : What if it rains ??
DD : We are definitely at the mercy of the weather but we ’ re crossing our fingers that we ’ ll have blue skies . Advance tickets are non-refundable but we would honor them for a future show of the moviegoers choice . We will also do our best to get any news out about cancellations via Facebook starlightcinemand
NJ : Who is supplying all the equipment ? Where did you get the big screen ?
DD : D & N Cinematics is providing the screen which is a 32 x 17 foot self-standing inflatable screen . The projector comes from Minneapolis the day before showtime ( it was the only place we could find one bright enough ).
NJ : Is there anything you would like to add ?
DD : We are really excited about the turn-out for the first event and had a lot of fun . This is a big undertaking and so we want to thank everyone including our sponsors , staff and most importantly , attendees , for all the support .
We would encourage everyone to come check it out . Doors open at 7:30 PM with live and local music . We start the movie when it ’ s dark enough to project , usually around 9:30 PM , depending on conditions and time of year .
