The air is thick with the smell of BBQ, pizza, essential oils,
lavender lotions, henna ink, and deep fried goodness.
The colorful vegetables line the street with deep green,
light green, brilliant purple, vivid orange, and fire engine
red. Kids laugh and draw with chalk and play with hula
hoops or street games.. Local music from favorite local musicians and some excited new performers fills the
streets bouncing off the buildings. These are the sights and
sounds of Urban Harvest.
Urban Harvest was founded in the spring of 2005 by a
group of four women. All were North Dakota natives who
moved out-of-state and then returned to Bismarck to raise
families. Outdoor public marketplaces were thriving in
the cities and towns where they had lived or visited. Such
a marketplace here in Bismarck/Mandan could give this
city the economic and cultural outlet it was lacking. And
so, Urban Harvest was born. Great crowds and participation by vendors, musicians, community organizations, and
shoppers alike made it clear that Urban Harvest was filling
a niche, and that the community was supportive of its
continued growth.
Urban Harvest runs every Thursday from July 7th to
August 11th between 4th and 5th St. on Broadway Avenue
in downtown Bismarck. Kids activities start at 10 a.m. and
there is live music on and off throughout the day until 8
p.m.
This year, one of the event organizers Anita Hellman,
promises an expansion to everyone’s favorite part of street
fair, “We have created a foodies’ paradise this year with
more food vendors than ever! Past favorites The Walrus,
Fireflour Pizza and Jack’s on the Go will be returning and
expect some exciting new flavors from LaVonne’s Cheese
buttons, Rusty’s Saloon and Grill, Russian Olive Catering,
Hot Cookie Mama, Mertz Catering and Caffè Aroma.”
Hellman said they are also planning a new event, “Christmas in July will be on July 21st, with a visit from Santa,
Christmas stories during Children’s Hour, selfies with
Santa, and lots of Christmas themed fun!”
It takes a lot of volunteers to pull off this event every week
and they are always looking to add to their volunteer team.
