LIFE ON MARS
Cinema meets planetarium.
Life On Mars is a part
rehabilitation and new-build
project of the Ritzy cinema
that connects to the Tate
Library beside. A hybrid use of
the space that provides a new
relationship between fiction,
science and education.
Drawing inspiration from
astronomical principles, the
space comprises of ‘celestial
bodies’: the inverted dome,
the marquise structure and
sphere within. Suspended
through the building it emits
a continuous skylight around
the sphere.
The Inverted dome provides
a new authentic experience
of the night sky. Visitors are
guided along on a special
journey through the building
that reveals the new organic
design. It can be viewed
from Brixton Oval and across
all floors, visitors can see
the special construction
techniques used which
reveals hanging sphere within
the outer layer of the glass
and steel faceted structure
which creates a jewel like
feature.
