It proved a smart one . Building a new master suite over the top of the garage and extending the original verandah around it , doubled the width of the frontage to ensure the new extension , comprising of the kitchen , living area , gym and alfresco space , was concealed from the street . “ Our design solution not only preserved the home ’ s historical integrity , but also allowed the original home to sit comfortably within its heritage streetscape ,” Steve says .
The front of the home was meticulously restored and provided three bedrooms , a sumptuous family bathroom , a media room , and a king-size bedroom with French doors opening to the front veranda . Off the master bedroom is a large dressing room and a luxury hotel-inspired ensuite .
“ One of my favourite hidden details in the master ensuite is the view from the bath !” says Steve . The tub sits exposed in the space and looks into the bedroom and front veranda . I thought how lovely it would be to take in views of the family living spaces right through to the garden and pool , so we installed a hidden hutch door within the built-in cabinetry with a bookshelf that can be opened and allows connection with family .”
Where the cottage ’ s existing jarrah boards meet the new addition , vast glass panes reveal a spacious open-plan living area where a generous island bench pulls focus in the kitchen against luxurious walnut veneer and black cabinetry . Steve says harnessing natural light was an essential factor to consider .
“ Large commercial-size sliding doors were installed to the north-facing side of the home , bringing the garden inside and ensure that light is distributed evenly , making the space feel larger and more open .”
