The new addition ’ s monochromatic palette mingles with natural finishes such as timber , referencing the original home ’ s floorboards . “ Creating an effortless transition between the old and the new largely depends on the materials chosen for the addition , so as there was old timber in the existing home it was nice to bring some through into the extension and alfresco area ,” says Steve . “ It takes on a more contemporary tone but creates a lovely connection between the two – it doesn ’ t feel jarring .”
The same applies to the breezeway that subtly separates the two , respecting the old home while warmly inviting you into the new space . “ We welcome design challenges where you ’ re pushing the boundaries and working around an existing structure ,” Steve says . “ It ’ s so satisfying to see it come to fruition . I believe any problem or desire can be resolved with good design .”
When the large recessed glass doors are stacked , indoors and outdoors combine into one large entertaining space , with a timber-clad alfresco area embracing a barbecue , kitchen , lounge and dining space , and a plunge pool and deck .
“ The timber box looks right into the kitchen and the pool area , so there is a wonderful feeling of indoor-outdoor integration ,” Steve says . “ It is full of hidden doors that conceal amenities like a little storeroom , fridge , barbecue , and even a bathroom for the pool . You would never guess they are there – it works beautifully .”
The home ’ s design focused on creating beautiful spaces with functionality and adaptability . “ The room overlooking the swimming pool was initially designed as a cycling room for Jill and Eddy , which evolved into a playroom for their first child , and then a home office . Good design address a current need , but great design adapts with future needs ” Steve says .
“ Cabinetry wraps the space , and a tucked-away glass sliding door can be pulled across to compartmentalise the room or left open to allow an expanse of space . This design flexibility allows spaces to evolve with the journey of family and life , enabling Jill and Eddy to make the most of their home .”
Using a blend of complex civil works , traditional build methods and contemporary design , Steve and his team have created a winning family home . “ Stepping through the front door , you immediately notice the beautiful timber floors , high ceilings , big architraves and the beautiful details of that era . You then turn to the corner and look down the hallway and into the new modern space that invites you in ,” he says . “ The solutions overcame the challenges , and the home is now an epitome of history shaking hands with modern-day design ethos .”
“ When we completed the home and took our first steps inside , Jill and Eddy ’ s beaming smiles were the ultimate testament to our success . Their satisfaction is our greatest reward .”
“ We completed this home eight years ago , and its design is still as relevant and contemporary as it was then . I ’ m proud we delivered on the owners ’ vision and saw the home smash Subiaco ’ s sales record – a fantastic result !”
