“ Old meets new ” - creative design solution to address council guidelines ...
The refurbishment and remodelling of Heatherbell ’ s original architectural silhouette evolved its heritage style , which is key to this home ’ s enduring appeal . The transformative design restored its 1920s layout , extended the existing bedroom zone , and opened a new , light-filled , flexible living area to the rear garden .
Urbane faced a unique challenge in the project — the need for a discreet location for a two-car garage . The Subiaco Council ’ s requirement that car parking for existing heritage homes , not visible from the street , be provided as a basement or concealed behind the built form , posed a significant hurdle .
Steve ’ s innovative approach was to place the garage underground , which involved piling under the heritage home . This feat of engineering proved a testament to Urbane ’ s problem-solving skills and commitment to meeting the project ’ s unique requirements .
By opting for an underground garage , valuable square meterage was preserved and Steve constructed the new master suite over the top of the garage , extending the original veranda around it . In doing so , he not only ingeniously concealed the new extension from the street but also doubled the width of the frontage , a design change that significantly elevated the property ’ s appeal .
