A FEELING OF

HOME

Home is not a place , it is not four walls and a roof or even the rooms from which it is composed . Home is a feeling , a perception expressed within each person , felt , and experienced differently by each one of us . The structural form of a home is nothing more than an extension of this individualist feeling , adding complexity and diversity to the personal requirements of each resident . The work of a designer is one of people before being one of labour , their duty is to turn “ brick and mortar ” into a home , to extract their clients ’ most ambitious dream and translate them into the language of construction . It is a craft of emotion with communication being just as important a tool as the pen you use for the first sketch . The question is for many of us , how do we turn a house into a home ? What is the process to effectively transform an empty space into a welcoming home ? Read on as Sam gives us an overview of her approach to achieving this feat .

In Sam ’ s view , a home is “ something that is true to the person living in it ”. A home should reflect the lifestyle and personality of its residents and when properly designed , this connection should be noticeable by guests who visit . A home really becomes your home when it is an extension of your personality ; a reflection of your personal style and your best ally to live your best life ! As a designer , creating such an important part of someone ’ s life can be challenging , especially when people are torn between “ what they want ”, the current trends , and quite often , resale . As a designer , it is your job to guide them and sometimes challenge their thinking to get them out of their comfort zone and dare to explore different design avenues . It is a work of discovery and we designers have the duty to sometimes present to our client ’ s things they never knew they liked .
Turning a “ house ” into a “ home ” requires dedication and commitment . The home you end up with might look very different from the one you imagined at the beginning of your journey , but more often than not , is so mucg more than you had hoped for . The process of creating a home is a Journey , an Experience . It should be a moment you enjoy and have the opportunity to contribute to the design thinking and discussions of your home . Working at Urbane , Sam has all the tools necessary to make each project she designs a “ home ”. Each client ’ s journey is tailored to their own pace . Some like to take their time , others prefer to have a faster pace and it is our job to understand this and create an experience that matches each client ’ s expectation . Being a home designer , it is as much , if not more important , to provide a premium experience in our clients ’ journey than it is to produce good design .
“ I love the artistic approach side of being an interior designer . There is no copy and paste , each home designed is a new canvas , and a new opportunity to explore the whole spectrum of what makes a home . It is quite interesting and important to keep in mind , as a designer , that we are not creating something for yourself but for somebody else which makes communication and understanding a tool as important as the software , we use to draw plans . It is really an art between creativity , problem solving , and human connections .”
