"DON'T LET ANYBODY HOLD YOU BACK AND INFLUENCE YOU TO DO WHAT YOU DON'T WANT"

"I TRY TO CREATE GOOD MUSIC AND PORTRAY MYSELF IN A POSITIVE LIGHT"

U.G. Digital Mag: To interject, I love that you don’t feel people are necessarily competition. When there’s others doing similar things, it’s not really competition when you’re in your own lane.

Drea Love: Right. It’s a lot of people who do the same thing. You may do it differently, and it’s OK. I love music, and dancing, and making people happy while listening to me.

U.G. Digital Mag: I think it’s really awesome when I look at the big picture of it all. When I play your single and look at your videos, I see how you’ve been out here grinding. People look at it like you’re blowing overnight, but you’ve been working hard. I see class, empowerment, self confidence, beauty, and so much more in your brand. I feel like it’s a full package. Was it a conscious move in terms of how you wanted your image to be?

Drea Love: It was because that’s the type of person I am. I’m not the kind of person who has always been overly confident. I didn’t want to put myself out there like I was something that I wasn’t. I have young girls, even when I do family shows, I have young girls looking at me. I have a daughter, and I know how I want her to see me. I was raised in Mississippi in a Baptist church, and the way I was raised allowed me to be creative and not compare myself. That has a lot to do with how I want to be portrayed. I have my adult songs, but I’m not trying to be somebody I’m not.
