Urban Grandstand Digital Issue 11: Maleke O'ney, Stacy Rose, & Divine Brown | Page 73

Toronto has become quite the breeding ground for new talent in urban music. New artist Veronica has been tearing up the charts with her new music. She broke a lot of ground with her debit single, Incompatible, and the buzz continues to grow with each new song. We had a few moments to sit and talk with this budding starlet.

U.G. Digital Mag: I love the single “What Happened”. You are really amazing. Do you get that a lot from people who hear this single?

Veronica: Yes, I think because it’s a little unexpected. It’s been a really positive response, and I think its because its really chill and easy to listen to. Its very uncomplicated and easy on the ears.

U.G. Digital Mag: I think that’s what it is for me. I love the bass, and I’m a big hip-hop fan. It takes me back to that very thing with the production. Who did you work with?

Veronica: I worked with a multiplatinum team from Toronto. Miles co-produced the song. He’s actually an artist from Toronto. He’s in a punk rock band. It’s a bit of a change for him. He was one of the co-producers, along with my main producer. His background is amazing. I think that’s why it has more of that influence in it. But like you, I love hip-hop as well.

U.G. Digital Mag: I love that you’re from Toronto. I connect with a lot of people from Toronto, and it’s cool because my eyes have opened in regard to how much talent is there. I also hear of the struggle in the area and artists having to leave for success. What has your experience been?

Veronica: It definitely is a grind, no matter your age. With that passion comes the hard work behind it. I’ve been all over the place writing. When I was 18, I had the opportunity to go to L.A. and write. Experiencing that, I’d be in the room with a big producer who wanted me to go with a sound that was not me. it wouldn’t be me though.

U.G. Digital Mag: How did you maneuver around that and get to a place where you could vocalize your desires? A lot of new artist don’t really have a word in it.
