Building a Sustainable World with Graphcrete ®
Achieving decarbonisation targets using Graphene Oxide based concrete ( Graphcrete ®) with supplementary cementitious materials
Pilot Program
The project addresses the challenge of reducing concrete performance when high volumes of supplementary cementitious materials ( SCMs ), such as Fly Ash ( FA ) and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag ( GGBFS ), are used to replace cement . While these materials have long been recognised for their sustainability benefits , excessive replacement can weaken concrete ' s performance . The research explores how Graphene Oxide ( GO ) can be introduced as an innovative solution to counterbalance these drawbacks without altering the concrete ' s fundamental microstructure .
By enhancing the concrete ' s performance and maintaining its strength , the study shows that GO can offset the performance reduction caused by high SCM content . Comprehensive laboratory experiments and tests demonstrate that GO improves SCM-added concrete ' s mechanical and durability properties , even with significantly reduced cement use .
The project aligns with the construction industry ' s shift towards sustainability and offers significant benefits in achieving lower CO2 emissions targets . • 13
