Coastal Region The Coastal Region of Southern California has a Mediterranean climate. In a Mediterranean climate, the seasons consist of warm summers, mild wet winters, cool pleasant falls, and warm springs. The region remains mild in both summer and winter temperatures, with a lower probability of extremely high or low temperatures than in other regions. Mediterranean climates have an average temperature above 72°F in their warmest months, and an average in the coldest between 32-64°F. The average precipitation for the Coastal Region is about 16 inches per year, though the actual precipitation varies between 3-22 inches, depending on the microclimate within the Coastal Region. Most precipitation falls in the winter months, though the region also gets small amounts of precipitation occasionally throughout the rest of the year.
