Change the World helps South Dallas Metro District to host a
North Texas United
Methodists can be both
national and local in mission
May 17 by taking part in
Change the World Day.
Observed annually, on
this day United Methodists
across the nation will pour
into their communities to
serve, learn and worship.
The idea for Change the
World came from United
Methodist Pastor
Mike Slaughter’s
book Change the
World: Recovering the
Message and Mission
of Jesus. It challenges
Christians to
step outside the
church walls and
get out into their
communities.
The North Texas Board
of Global Ministries has
coordinated a day of serving,
learning and worship.
Through cooperative
efforts, South Dallas
agencies including Dallas
Bethlehem Center, City
Square, St. Philips School
and Community Center and
Park South YMCA will hold
morning work projects.
That afternoon, there will
be lunch and classes
at First UMC Dallas.
Topics include
“Pedagogy of the
Oppressed,” “Faith
and Public Policy”
and “When Helping
Hurts” The day will
conclude with a
worship service and
sermon by Bishop Michael
McKee at First UMC Dallas.
Hamilton to appear at
Perkins Lecture Series
Adam Hamilton, founder of the 18,000-member United
Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kan., will
headline the Perkins Lecture Series, scheduled May 19-20 at

Hamilton launched the
Church of the Resurrection
with his
wife and
two children
in 1990.
Today, with
an average
weekend
attendance of
8,600, it is the largest United
Methodist church in the
United States.
The Perkins Lecture Series
sessions will start at 7 p.m.
May 19 and 11 a.m. and 7
p.m. May 20 at First UMC
Wichita Falls. Lunch will
follow the 11 a.m. session. For

UPUMC | MAY 2014
day in the park for NTC
summer activities
The Metro District is
reaching into the heart
of the city and hosting a
Summer Family Fun Day at
Klyde Warren Park from 11
a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday, June 8.
Radio Disney is joining the
Metro District at the covered
pavilion of Klyde Warren
Park, the 5.2-acre deck
park built over the recessed
Woodall Rodgers Freeway
between Pearl and St. Paul
streets in downtown Dallas.
On an average Sunday,
3,000 people come to the
park, officials estimate.
“This is not an event
for us. It is for others,” said
District Superintendent
Cammy Gaston, as the
church reaches out to
families.
Radio Disney, which
has teamed with the
North Texas Conference
on Christmas, Easter and
summer campaigns, is
joining the Metro District
in the activities. Plans call
for dancers, drummers,
musicians, and arts and
crafts, in addition to the
park’s playgrounds, board
games and line of food
trucks.
Metro District families
are asked to come enjoy
the day and wear one of
their church T-shirts. The
Metro District is hoping to
“leverage this and bring
kids and their parents to our
churches VBS programs and
other Summer activities,”
the Rev. Gaston said.
“I went to the Radio
Disney event last year and
saw how thankful people
were to be a part of a fun
event hosted by the United
Methodist Church,” Rev.
Gaston said. “They have a
way of drawing in kids that
is amazing.”
