How did the tournament get started? The original tournament started in 1977, it was called the BF community league. The league was started by Evan Brady, Carlton Reed and Monty Hammond. They started it as well as played in it; I played also. I left D.C. and went into the military in 1983. When I finished my tour of duty and returned home in August of 1995. To my surprise, there was no summer league, for whatever reason the league had ended and no one picked it back up, so I decided to bring it back and we re-emerged the summer of 1996 as the Goodman League. Did you play in high school or college? I love the sport. I played JV and recreation basketball at the boys club but it was nothing serious. However, I opted for a military career. I enrolled and was in the military for 12 years. When you restarted the tournament in 1996 why didn’t you keep the original name? It was a new beginning and I wanted to pay homage to a very important person who touched many lives, including mines. We renamed it in honor of George Goodman.
