PROFILE OF UPO BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEMBERS Newly Elected Board Members Usher In Community Focus WHERE ARE THEY NOW? UPO Scholarship Recipients His name is Maurice M. Scott, a former UPO Passport-To-Work student; 2005 recipient of the UPO/ Joseph A. Beavers Scholarship, and an ordained minister. Expect to see and hear much about Scott, who this fall begins his senior year at North Carolina A & T University at Greensboro. North Carolina. He is currently president of the A&T NAACP Chapter. Not bad for a young man who just recently turned 21. Take a moment to meet Dr. Courtney Davis, a newly elected member to the United Planning Organization’s Board of Directors, representing the city’s Ward-8 neighborhoods. Talented, caring, and energetic, Dr. Davis graduated from Hampton University majoring in Special Education. She subsequently earned a Masters in Education from the University of Illinois, subsequently returning to the east coast to study for and ultimately earn a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia focusing on special education. Dr. Davis noted that poverty remains a critical issue and requiries multiple ways to diminish its effect on the community by providing quality educational resources for both young people and adults. She wants to make certain existing social networks work together, and increase partnerships in order to ensure job opportunities. Having worked as an educator, administrator, and advocate, Dr. Davis wants to ensure that all services and programs are available to persons with disabilities. “I have a passon for working with youth and adults in urban areas to unleash their potential to learn and become change agents in their own community,” she says. 6 Introducing Alexander M. Padro, Commissioner, ANC2C01, and newly elected member of UPO’s Board of Directors, representing Wards 2 and 6. An elected Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner, Mr. Padro brings a wealth of experience, skills, and knowledge to the Board especially with respect to urban issues.
