Hmong farmers grow a variety of produce , from staple vegetables to culturally appropriate produce . “ Just on the HAFA farm alone , our farmer members grow over 120 varieties of mixed fruits , vegetable and flowers , consisting of tomato , potato , cucumber , spinach , ginger and strawberry to more cultural produce like bitter melon , lemon grass , Thai eggplant and other Hmong herbs ,” Hang said .
Year-round markets do exist in Minnesota , such as the St . Paul Farmers Market and Mill City
Farmers Market . However , year-round farmers ’ markets are limited due to access to an indoor space . The markets typically consist of an outdoor space during the warmer months and transition to indoor space during the off season , Hang said .

Last year ’ s drought may not impact the crops Hmong farmers plan to grow this coming season , according to Hang . However , there have been numerous conversations about how much will be planted to minimize the risk “ if we were to enter into another drought ,” Hang said . “ Farmers are also exploring other options : installing drip irrigation , and planting varieties that are more drought resistance to avoid total loss as seen last year .”
