Oma ’ s Bread , WADENA Authentic German foods – including spaetzle , kuchen , and schnitzel -- have been served at Oma ’ s Bread in Wadena since the restaurant opened in 2017 . It is owned by Annette Schmidlin , who came to the U . S . from Achkarren , Germany , nine years ago .

“ I do the baking , and my brother , who came to the U . S . at the beginning of December 2021 , cooks ,” said Yvonne Willis , Schmidlin ’ s daughter , who came to the U . S . 17 years ago . “ We have a couple of waitresses .”
Explaining why the family opened their restaurant in Wadena , Willis said , “ I went to high school a town over , and just stayed in Minnesota .”
Popular dishes at Oma ’ s Bread include kuchen and schnitzel , she said . “ Our goulash is great ; it ’ s not a hot dish ,” Willis said .
The menu lists spaetzle , plus five kinds of quiche , and eight types of kuchen .
“ The community has been very supportive ,” Willis said of the restaurant , which seats 80 people .

“ We are of German descent , so the name is fitting (“ Oma ” is German for Grandma ). We enjoy bringing some of home with us and specialize in baked goods . After moving to the states , we ’ ve found a way to share our love of German style baking with you all . I ’ m an Oma of a handful of children , so baking is one of my passions . Making and eating breads is essential to our household and our business .”

Schmidlin said her family began selling their product at several farmer ’ s markets before opening their first storefront in August of 2017 .
“ With having a brick-and-mortar bake shop , we were able to accommodate our client ’ s orders year-round ,” Schmidlin said . “ The community enjoyed our baked products so much we decided to add a lunch menu a year later . After three years of having our storefront , we outgrew it fast and opened a much bigger restaurant and bakery .
“ We are currently open later on Friday and Saturday evenings with our unique German menu , and sometimes feature a special . We are very grateful for the support we have received and are happy to invite you to our restaurant and bakery for a German bite to eat , a fresh baked pastry and specialty cup of coffee .”
The restaurant , at 10 Aldrich Ave . SW , is open from 7 a . m . to 3 p . m . Tuesday and Wednesday , and from 7 a . m . to 8 p . m . Thursday , Friday , and Saturday .
