For those who just want to observe wild rice being harvesting and don ’ t necessarily want to go out on the water to do it , Geisen recommends going to the public access on a rice lake to observe . “ People can also get an opportunity to ask questions of those with experience ricing around 3 p . m . every day during harvest season . That ’ s typically when the ricers are coming off the lake for the day ,” she says .
Another good place to observe is Ray ’ s Wild Rice in Brainerd . Ray Puetz , 80 , has been harvesting the wild rice he planted on his property since 1967 , and his wife , Marilyn , says he really enjoys having visitors .
“ We used to have a lot of school groups come out to observe , but that hasn ’ t been happening recently . Ray loves talking about what he does and would be happy to chat with anyone who stops by ,” she says .
