The season runs from August 15 , 2022 to September 30 , 2022 , from 9 a . m . to 3 p . m . daily . A one-day license for Minnesota residents costs $ 15 while a license for the entire season is $ 25 . Minnesota also has a one-day , non-resident license available for $ 30 .
“ Non-residents who want to go out more than one day would need to buy a license every day , and that seems to be something unique to Minnesota ,” says Geisen , who adds that people from almost all 50 states , and some foreign countries have purchased licenses to harvest wild rice in Minnesota .

In addition to purchasing a license , there are also rules regarding harvesting equipment . Only non-motorized boats can be used , and they can ’ t be longer than 18 feet or wider than 36 inches at the widest point .
“ This comes from back in the day when wild ricing was incredibly popular and kind of competitive . People were out to get as much rice as they could . Putting size restrictions on is meant to protect the rice and keeps folks from damaging stalks of rice with great big boats ,” says Geisen , who adds that once harvested , people will need to get their rice processed .
Wild Rice Processors
There are a handful of wild rice processors in the state . Some of them will only work with people who are bringing in large quantities of rice . Others are open to also processing small quantities . Calling the business ahead is highly recommended , as some businesses require an appointment .
