It all started in 1934, when Harry E. Roese, manager of the Bemidji District State Employment Office, decided to build a one-ofa-kind fireplace for his hometown of Bemidji. The result was the ambitious Fireplace of States, built with a collection of rocks and stones from all over the world. Dean Beattie, Visitor Experience Representative, said,“ To accomplish this feat, Kathleen Wilson, Roese’ s secretary, wrote to every state governor, to officials of all the Canadian provinces and to the superintendent of each national monument.” Roese created a hearth and an art project made to represent the cooperation of American states and beyond.
The idea caught on, and rocks and stones from far and wide were shipped to Minnesota to become part of the grand plan. Dean said,“ It’ s pretty amazing that people were shipping rocks, which must have been expensive during this time of the Great Depression.” Wilson and Roese worked tirelessly, eventually catching the interest of the Works Progress Administration( WPA) created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to help unemployed workers find suitable jobs. The WPA provided stone masons who built the fireplace in 1935 inside a log house welcome center on Lake Bemidji.
When the Tourist Information Center on Lake Bemidji waterfront was built in 1995, the fireplace was shrink-wrapped and moved, intact, to the new building. While many of the stones were etched or decorated with messages indicating their sender, others have no trace of origin on their surface.
There is a list of donors and the rock descriptions.
