BEST PICTURE - 12 Years a Slave

This was one of the stand out films of the year, and it was clear that out of the nominations that this was the only film that would leave a lasting impression on generations to come, while also winning two other awards.

BEST ACTOR - Matthew McConaughey

Yes, of course Leonardo Dicaprio deserves at least one Oscar for delivering brilliant performances throughout his career, but there is no doubt that Matthew McConaughey deserved the Oscar this year. He lost staggering 50 pounds to play the role of Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club.

BEST ACTRESS - Cate Blanchett

The Australian actress won her second Oscar on Sunday night, after previously winning best supporting actress - beating the likes of Sandra Bullock, Amy Adams, Judi Dench and Meryl Streep. She had been deemed the front-runner from the beginning of the awards season.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - Jared Leto

The lead singer of 30 Seconds to Mars won his oscar for the role of Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club. He put in a deserving performance to convincingly play Rayon, who is a transgender woman. However, the film has been critised for not casting a transgender actor.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Lupita Nyong'o

Lupita won for her debut film performance where she played the role of Patsey in 12 Years a Slave. She potrayed the hardship of slave women perfectly and contributed to the film winning best picture.

GRAVITY - 7 WINS

The biggest winner was, ‘Gravity’ taking seven Oscars in total, including best visual effects, cinematography and original score.
