Tense
Be consistent in your use of tense . Choose present or past tense , as suits the circumstances , and avoid switching .
If you can say it with a verb , do . And look for the simplest verb that suits the context .
News stories , press releases and other pieces about events that have happened are most logically written in past tense . This follows standard practice in most mainstream media .

Pieces about upcoming events , or feature pieces , can be more energetic or human if written in present tense .
When quoting someone indirectly in the past tense , make the indirect quote past tense , too :

The Dean said the faculty will expand the program after it consults key academics .
