The past few years have been some of the most challenging in generations . People around the world have been tested and stretched in ways they may never have imagined . Yet , those incredible trials prompted critical research that produced life-saving outcomes with global application for , and beyond , the immediate .
At UNSW Sydney , we pulled together to support each other and the broader community , both in Australia and beyond our borders . Significantly , the research and innovations we produced and facilitated in the past few years are some of our most impactful yet .
Research translation is a priority for UNSW , grounded in our vision to improve lives around the world . Our world-leading research and innovation ecosystem is critical to this mission , with its focus on real-world application , securing Australia ’ s sovereign capability , and delivering social and economic impact . These are core to our goal of being the most entrepreneurial university in Australia . UNSW ranks number one nationally for creating startups and spinouts – just one excellent pathway for translating razor-sharp innovation into real impact .
The 100 innovations and capabilities featured here are an impressive showcase of what is not only possible , but how UNSW is powering research and technologies that are already changing the world .
With ideas as diverse as using open-source data to predict future pandemics ; recycling waste material into plastic filament for 3D printing ; treating mental illness with psychedelic-inspired medicine ; and technology that turns water from the moon into rocket fuel , the creativity and expertise of our research and innovation community is as exciting as it is profound .
