CITY ANALYTICS LAB
UNSW RESEARCH
The science of cities is inherently multidisciplinary . Research and innovations in the fields of planning , economics , transportation , real estate , etc . are often pursued in silos . There is a need for a space where stakeholders from all fields can come together and innovate , using methodologies like co-design and geo-design .
CANOPUS NETWORKS
UNSW SPINOUT
Canopus Networks is a provider of AI-based application and network traffic analytics software with a mission to make telecommunications service providers more profitable by giving them deep visibility into customer behaviour and user experience over their fixed-line and 4G / 5G mobile networks .
Canopus Networks ’ patented IP enables telcos to utilise their multi-billion-dollar infrastructure more efficiently , reduce customer support and churn costs , and create new revenue-generating offerings for cloud gaming and live sport subscription services .
Founded by UNSW academic experts and backed by industry veterans , the Canopus solution is built on Terabit speed P4 programmable switching technology coupled with patented AI engines trained on stochastic behavioural models , making it the world ’ s most scalable , accurate , costeffective , and encryptionresistant application-aware network traffic analytics platform in the market .
The City Analytics Lab ( CAL ) addresses this problem by providing a dedicated physical hub to encourage the exchange of ideas , accelerate growth and foster innovation . It also allows the disciplines to work together on policy , research and technology related to designing our futures cities . The CAL hub includes a large planning and decision support theatre with multiple digital-touchscreen tables , dedicated VR / AR rooms , a media recording room , a tangible table sandbox , observation rooms and eyetracking equipment for user-centred design experiments . In addition , CAL is part of the iHub – National Urban Research Platform , which enables users to perform data-intensive remote
collaboration . CAL has hosted more than 300 workshops attended by ~ 3500 participants . It has also successfully incubated Slate Analytics , a UNSW enterprise , in collaboration with industry partner , PEXA . PEXA is building an industry leading Automated Valuation Model for the Australian property market .
> Successful incubation of Slate Analytics – a joint UNSW enterprise with Property Exchange Australia ( PEXA ) and FrontierSI . Products include the Rapid Analytics Interactive Scenario Explorer ( RAISE ).
> Hosted more than 300 events and 3500 attendees over four years , fostering innovation and collaboration .
> Real-world adoption by large Telcos .
> Substantial commercial contracts and sales .
$ 10M + capital raised .
