Leading courses in emerging areas UNSW Law is committed to delivering courses on new and emerging areas of study, so our students and graduates are able to apply traditional legal thinking to some of the dominating legal issues of the future. Some examples of these courses include: Law of the sea Course code: LAWS8086/JURD7586 Taught by Scientia Professor Rosemary Rayfuse The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface. They provide vital routes of international communication, rich sources of living and non-living resources for human use and consumption, and ecosystem services vital to humanity’s continued existence. This course examines the international legal regime that governs activities of States in their international relations concerning maritime matters on this, our ‘blue’ planet. Newly designed online modules introduce students to critical components of the legal regime in preparation for in-class discussions aimed at consolidating knowledge and understanding of the rights and duties of States in the maritime space and the way in which conflicting claims over its use arise and are handled. 36
