Leading courses in emerging areas
UNSW Law is committed to delivering courses on new and emerging areas of study, so our students and
graduates are able to apply traditional legal thinking to some of the dominating legal issues of the future.
Some examples of these courses include:
Law of the sea
Course code: LAWS8086/JURD7586
Taught by Scientia Professor Rosemary Rayfuse
The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface. They provide vital routes of international communication, rich sources
of living and non-living resources for human use and consumption, and ecosystem services vital to humanity’s continued
existence. This course examines the international legal regime that governs activities of States in their international relations
concerning maritime matters on this, our ‘blue’ planet. Newly designed online modules introduce students to critical
components of the legal regime in preparation for in-class discussions aimed at consolidating knowledge and understanding
of the rights and duties of States in the maritime space and the way in which conflicting claims over its use arise and
are handled.
