Program structure
Masters Degrees
All UNSW Law Masters degrees, except the Master of Environmental Law & Policy, require the completion of
48 UOC, or 8 courses (1 course = 6 UOC). The Master of Environmental Law & Policy requires the completion
of 72 UOC, or 12 courses.
To incorporate a specialisation into a Master of Laws by Coursework or a Master of Business Law, students
must choose 4 courses (24 UOC) from those allocated to that specialisation. The remaining courses may be
selected from any of those offered by UNSW Law (unless otherwise stated).

Masters students will be required to take some courses categorised as ‘Research Based Courses’ as part of
their 48 UOC program. The assessment required for the large majority of postgraduate courses on offer each
year means that they meet this ‘Research Based’ requirement. Details of which courses qualify as ‘Research
Based Courses’ will be available in the 2018 Handbook entries for each Masters program, and on the website.
Single Course Enrolment
We offer enrolment on a single course, non-award basis, with the option to credit courses towards a future
degree program, allowing students to study a particular course or ‘test the waters’ before enrolling in a full
degree program. Visit law.unsw.edu.au/future-students/non-award-enrolment for more details on how to apply.
UNSW Continuing Legal Education
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units obtained through UNSW Continuing Legal Education (CLE)
may be claimed for postgraduate study considered relevant to students’ immediate or long-term needs in
relation to their professional development and practice of the law. You can find more information about
obtaining advanced standing towards a chosen program on p39.
Please see the CLE website (cle.unsw.edu.au) for further details.
Please note: In 2019 UNSW Law is launching a new Master of Laws (LLM), open to law and non-law
graduates. To find out more about the new LLM and its available specialisations, visit law.unsw.edu.au/pg
