Located in Sydney , close to beaches and the heart of the city , our faculty is home to talented academic staff across three schools – Private & Commercial Law , Global & Public Law , and Law , Society & Criminology . Through our distinctive Schools as well as leading research , advocacy and education centres , staff and students collaborate on solutions to today ’ s biggest societal challenges . Our success is supported by deep interdisciplinary partnerships with colleagues across UNSW , and engagement with governments , the legal services profession , NGOs , and other leading law faculties around the globe .
Across five academic programs , we ensure our students graduate with a powerful combination of knowledge and skills to make a difference to the world . They have the very best academic grounding in law or criminology , informed by diverse theoretical perspectives and critique , and a deep understanding of how these disciplines operate in practice and their impact on society more broadly .
We take pride in the quality of our graduates and their achievements as our alumni – the surest sign of our success as a Faculty . Through our distinctive teaching tradition and focus on contemporary challenges , our students acquire the experience and skills for wherever they head after graduation , whether in commercial legal practice or community law centres , from running a startup , to working in the justice or law enforcement system , to roles in government or international organisations , developing law reform or public policy .
Our students experience law in practice through the UNSW Kingsford Legal Centre and other clinical legal education and internship opportunities , while criminology students have a strong capstone work-integrated experience . We provide all our students with a specialist , dedicated careers service to help them explore options throughout their degree so they are ready to take the next step that is right for them on graduation .
In the words of our founding Dean , Professor Hal Wootten AO , the faculty has and communicates ‘ a clear concern for those on whom the law bears harshly ’, Our teaching and research is diverse and varied , yet remains guided by this mission in its emphasis on the challenges of our times and law ’ s role in achieving a more just society under the rule of law . We are a world leader in research in many fields within those of our three Schools , including , commercial law , criminal law and criminology , public law , legal theory , climate change and forced migration , and law and technology . Our contributions reflect our commitment to the notion that the law must serve the needs of the community .
