Another way that the Business School engages with industry is via Australian Research Council ( ARC ) Linkage Projects . These projects encourage long-term strategic research alliances between higher education researchers and partner organisations from outside the sector . The scheme provides significant funding to support research and development projects which , among other criteria , apply advanced knowledge to real-world problems to obtain national economic , social or cultural benefits . The partners must make a significant contribution in cash and / or in-kind . Current projects include the following .

Reducing Youth Unemployment Through Social Procurement in Construction
Multiplex
Powell , A | Muir , K | Meltzer , A
Youth unemployment is an urgent , persistent and significant economic , social and health problem . Yet Australia ’ s largest youth employer , the construction industry , faces serious skills shortages to deliver an unprecedented construction pipeline . Social procurement is a potential solution to both these challenges but requires actors from government , construction and not-for-profit sectors to collaborate in new ways which are not yet understood . Leveraging long-standing industry partnerships and coupling expertise in construction , youth unemployment and social procurement , this research will produce new conceptual insights into effective cross-sector collaboration in construction , providing innovative solutions to address youth unemployment .

The Trustee for Construction & Building Unions Superannuation Fund , University of Sydney
Dobrescu , LI | Bateman , H | Newell , BR
This project will develop evidence-based communication tools that promote life-time financial security , specifically investigating the puzzling and harmful tendency of people to under-save while working and under- spend while retired . To do so , we will ( i ) design and experimentally validate innovative boosts to superannuation communication including income projections and goal-setting targeted at common misconceptions and biases , and ( ii ) employ new structural modelling techniques to measure the associated welfare changes - all with the final goal of raising financial capability and confidence .
Policy Modelling for Ageing in Emerging Economies : The Case of Indonesia
The World Bank Group , Bappenas
Kudrna , G | Piggott , JR
This project , in collaboration with the World Bank and the Indonesian Planning Authority , will support major social and economic policy development in a rapidly ageing region . It will break new ground by developing a cutting-edge economic policy model reflecting salient features of ageing in emerging economies , taking into account the wider implications for education , employment , formalisation , growth , and retirement . It will bring the armoury of policy analysis instruments available to these countries up to the standard now enjoyed by the developed world . Indonesia , on the brink of major pension reform , will be used as a test bed . Data sets will be developed to allow the model structure to be applied to other emerging economies in Asia .
