5.1 Connections with Practice
Principle 5
UNSW and the Business School are historically rooted in an ethos in which high calibre academic teaching and research have been closely integrated with the world of practice . For the Business School , such connections are fundamental to our educational and research objectives . We engage with industry through formal partnerships , events and communications , and student projects and placements .
The Business School has several advisory bodies that enable us to extend our knowledge of the challenges faced by business in meeting their social and environmental commitments . These include the Executive Committee , the Business Advisory Council ( BAC ), the Alumni Advisory Board and the Industry Engagement Advisory Group . For example , the BAC received and discussed results from the 2020 SDG audit , providing an opportunity to exchange university and industry experiences and approaches .
Our disciplinary schools , AGSM and research centres also have advisory boards and close connections with the corporate world through professional accreditations , research partnerships , the publication of professional journals / magazines , and the appointment of Professors of Practice .
Since 2019 , the addition of Professors of Practice to the Business School ’ s academic workforce has helped infuse contemporary understanding of the issues facing business into our programs and research . Professors of Practice work alongside academic staff and are generally senior executives who have led successful businesses , government agencies , industry bodies or not-for-profit organisations , or those who are currently company directors .
A number of these professors have personal experience in the areas of economic , social and environmental sustainability . Peter Leonard for example , is Professor of Practice for the School of Information Systems & Technology Management and the School of Management & Governance and was recently appointed to the NSW inaugural AI Government Committee . He is conducting research into the ethical implications and adverse social effects of artificial intelligence and machine learning , and the need for organisations ’ ethical frameworks and policies to ‘ catch up ’ to technological developments .
To date , nine Professors of Practice have been appointed , from across a broad range of professions and sectors . Their roles involve developing innovative research questions , advising faculty on their research projects , assisting in course content development and program reviews , and recommending initiatives to increase industry engagement .
In late 2021 the Business School will also be launching The Insights Unit , which will focus on translating research into practical and actionable insights for business , industry and government . The Insights Unit will function as a knowledge broker , an intermediary between academic research and our network of business partners .
We work with our partners to tackle global challenges like climate change
