Challenge
The Australian Defence Force requires high-performance weaponry to maintain asymmetric advantage. Traditional brass munitions are inadequate for next-generation squad weapons.
New legislation will phase out lead-containing brasses and bronzes, dismantling an entire worldwide material supply system. Hydrogen production via electrolysis requires expensive precious metals, which limits the scaling up of clean energy production.
Solution
A flagship alloy, Bright Brass TM, was designed to meet the requirements for high-pressure casings. It can be manufactured in munitions using existing infrastructure, at 10 % less cost than traditional brass.
A series of high-entropy brasses has also been developed to replace leaded brasses. In addition, new high-entropy precious-metal alloys exhibit superior efficiency to pure platinum for hydrogen production yet are 60 % to 70 % cheaper to produce. AAH can license its advanced alloys internationally for production( royalty stream).
Target customers / end-users
• defence Prime, for Bright Brass TM munitions
• bronze and brass product manufacturers for plumbing, free-machining applications
• clean energy producers for more efficient water-splitting catalytic alloys.
Progress
• defence Prime product validation( TRL6 – 7)
• bright Brass TM pre-supply contract for product qualification
• ongoing industry linkage projects for dual-use applications of high-entropy brasses and bronzes( plumbing / construction, marine and engineering sectors).
