Challenge
Urban decision-making is often fragmented, reactive and constrained by limited data insights. City planners, policymakers and communities face challenges in integrating complex information to achieve sustainable and equitable outcomes. CAL addresses this by providing data-driven, participatory tools to improve planning, reduce inefficiencies and support resilient, liveable and inclusive cities.
Solution
CAL offers an interactive environment combining advanced analytics, visualisation and co-design methods to support urban planning. Using bespoke platforms – CityData( data integration), CityViz( visualisation) – the lab empowers decision-makers, policymakers and communities to test scenarios, visualise impacts and inform policy.
By embedding research in teaching and fostering crosssector partnerships, CAL ensures adoption, scalability and long-term sustainability in city planning practices.

Housing & Connected Communities
The City Analytics Lab( CAL) at UNSW is a collaborative hub supporting city planning and user-centred design. It has been instrumental in the development of research projects such as Value Australia, Australian Housing Data Analytics Platform( AHDAP), and Improving the Bikeability of Our Cities where significant engagement with the partner organisation was required.
