" Some people, it drives totally crazy. But I can take all these pieces and put them together and I ' m fine."
she said.“ It’ s about what we have in common.”
Weiland’ s service extends well beyond the classroom. She volunteered for years as a Master Gardener, maintained public spaces, and participated in historical reenactments that brought hands-on learning to local children— teaching them about early life through tools, clothing, and storytelling.
She and her family also invested deeply in historical education through reenactment— bringing colonial-era demonstrations and displays to community events, including Williamsburg’ s celebration of its Bicentennial.
“ We set up a colonial camp, and the school brought school buses down and children to go through the camp and understand the stuff,” she recalled.
It was hands-on learning with tents, clothing, cooking equipment, and history told through objects that could be touched, tried on, and remembered.
She also speaks candidly about her health challenges, including cancer treatments and ongoing fatigue.“ I decided I could either go and do, or I could die,” she said.“ So I keep going.”
Today, she says her cancer is stable and she continues teaching when she can.“ It gives me something to look forward to,” she said.
Her greatest hope is that basket weaving— and the confidence it builds— will continue long after she can no longer teach.“ I want them to teach somebody else,” she said.“ I want this to have a future.”
When asked what advice she’ d give someone wanting to make a difference, her answer is simple:“ Just ask what needs to be done.”
