being part of the community’ s safety net.”
That perspective shapes how he views his role beyond physical safety.
“ By keeping the environment safe and stepping in during crises … we reduce fear and barriers,” he said.“ It helps them focus on healing while knowing someone’ s watching out for them.”
Serving the community where he lives and works remains central to why he does what he does.
“ This area— Jellico where I live with my family, Canada Town where I grew up, Corbin where I work— is interconnected,” Sulfridge said.“ Commuting daily and working extended shifts during storms is how I protect and give back to the people here.”
Some of the most difficult moments of his career came during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During Covid, to ensure safety, the staff at Baptist Health in Corbin had to ask for no visitation while their loved ones were in the hospital. Sulfridge noted the toughness of having to ask people not to come visit their family during that time, and the challenges that would follow.
Despite the challenges, Sulfridge stays motivated by his family and the people he serves.
“ My wife and 5 kids— they inspire me to show what dedication looks like,” he said.“ Plus, moments like helping that family in need remind me why security matters here.”
When asked what roles in his day-today life are like as a security guard that may go unnoticed to some, he noted instances like the recent winter storm.
“ Security roles do a lot quietly— extended patrols and shifts during storms … coordinating safe escorts / transports, arranging extras like meals, and keeping everything secure when conditions deteriorate,” Sulfridge said.“ We helped 81 staff members during last weekend’ s storm because the hospital is the community’ s safe haven.”
When asked what reminds him most why his work matters, his answer is simple:“ I treat people like I want my family to be treated.”
During crises, Sulfridge said, he sees the best of the community— staff coming together, people helping one another, and a hospital that truly becomes a safe haven.
Sulfridge is primarily stationed at the main entrance of the hospital while monitoring activity and assisting patients, visitors, and staff.
