The tradition of the Bales men being in the highest position in the Keavy Fire Department is not an issue with other members of the organization .
“ Everyone wanted me in that position ,” Mike said .
Moving forward is vital to the continuation of the services provided to the residents of the Keavy area . There are 25 volunteer firefighters on the roster , plus a Junior Firefighter program . Mike said there Junior Firefighter program currently has three or four up-and-coming volunteer firefighters .
“ We have some that are almost 18 and when they do [ have birthdays ], they will be firefighters . They become certified with 115 training hours and can advance to 300 hours . The fire department pays for their classes and they carpool and we pay their mileage ,” the chief said .

is one that has drawn the volunteers together for a good purpose .
“ If I had to do it all over again , yes I would ,” he said . “ I ’ ve enjoyed my time at the fire department . We have good friendships . There ’ s no bickering . We keep moving forward and it ’ s a good atmosphere .”
