Heroes in our community don ’ t all look the same , but all deserve our respect

By Christopher Harris Editor
Heroes come in a lot of different forms .
Some save lives on a daily basis , risking theirs in the process . Some take on duties that many of us might shy away from , things that need to be done nonetheless . Some make a difference in little ways , making ripples in the water that can turn out to be waves .
Some , in fact , aren ’ t even human beings , but instead our furry friends on four legs .
The Commonwealth Journal ’ s annual “ Unsung Heroes ” magazine is dedicated to recognizing the heroes in our community in all their varieties . Some , perhaps , cannot have their praises sung enough , some are taken for granted , and some may be completely overlooked much of the time .
But they are all our heroes , nonetheless .
In this year ’ s magazine , we put a spotlight on our county ’ s firefighters . The area has seen its share of high-profile blazes lately , and these brave men and women were right there on the scene each and every time , putting themselves in harm ’ s way to help others .
We also profile the community ’ s funeral homes and directors . The job of caring for the deceased is a difficult one in many ways , with the ability to navigate often delicate situations and do one ’ s job with care and a respect for both the living and the departed . They are heroes in our midst , no doubt about it .
We also learn about what the Somerset-Pulaski County Rescue Squad is doing to help its K9 units stay safe in the field , and have extended the opportunity for the area ’ s first responder organizations to send in photos of their proud number .
The Commonwealth Journal is proud to make this effort to honor our community ’ s unsung heroes , and we hope that you will take the time in your own life to show your respect for them as well when the opportunity arises — and to reflect on everything they do for us , every day of the year .
