From the Editor
A t the Unnamed Journal, we strive to meet our self-imposed deadlines. Our general rule for publishing is that
we do one issue quarterly that is released on the 15th of the appointed month. We manage to keep to that
schedule most of the time but obviously not for this issue.
Sometimes life gets in the way of deadlines and finishing stories. It's when life interrupts us with its
uncompromising demands for attention that we are reminded that we ourselves are characters in the stories of
our own lives. Those stories contain shocks, surprises, and unfortunate twists, amongst a host of other qualities.
The past several months have offered a fair share of challenges to me. I can only hope that moving through
these events has added positively to my character, and if nothing else, all of it is fuel for future stories.
I just have to remind myself to be selective about which of swears and curses I leave in the final draft.
This issue we have the creepy tale of a para-geologist attempting to survey a stretch of land that has defied all
attempts at mapping it in, The Barrens, by Andrew Patrick. This is followed by Negotiating Magic, written by
yours truly, which finds two wizards at odds about their respective roles in the world. We round out this issue
with The Emperor's Justice, by Thomas Fitz, wherein we follow a planet-hopping imperial assassin on a
mission to root out treason and betrayal.
