TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE WE ARE PORTSMOUTH
By 2030 we will be the top modern university in the UK and one of the top 100 young universities in the world . That is the University ’ s bold vision . Naturally , we can ’ t get there in one leap . Here , we set out our Strategy for the next five years – what we need to do by 2025 to be on course to make our Vision a reality .
Both our Vision and Strategy are ambitious – and with good reason . We are on the rise . In 2017 , we were awarded TEF Gold – the highest rating for teaching quality . In 2019 we were awarded £ 5.8 million by Research England to develop our plastics research – the largest single research award in the University ’ s history . In the 2020 Guardian League Table we have risen to 21st – the highest position in the University ’ s history . And we have continued to be a desirable destination for students .
There is no reason we cannot continue our success – and every reason why we can . Just as importantly , our people expect us to be ambitious . As part of our Strategy development we held focus groups , town halls , and roundtable events with our staff . Consistently , we heard that we should be more ambitious and push ourselves further to be more distinctive . We believe that this Strategy realises our staff and governors ’ ambitions for our University .
There is no doubt that implementing this Strategy , and realising our longer-term Vision , will be challenging and will require changes to how we work . Students ’ and learners ’ needs are changing , as are society ’ s expectations of universities , and so too are the local and global challenges our research must address . Change is inevitable , the only question being the form it will take .
In setting a bold direction , our Vision and Strategy puts the University in charge of the change we will face . This must be the right response . But no matter how we develop as a University , our core values – who we are – will remain the same .
By 2025 we will still create , share and apply knowledge to make a difference to individuals and society . But we will be better at it . We will also be halfway towards realising our Vision to be the top modern university in the UK and one of the top 100 young universities in the world . We hope you ’ ll join us on this exciting and ambitious journey .
