Louis and Esther Kaplan Fund
for Special Collections
An estate gift of $200,000 has established
a new fund to benefit the UW–Madison
Libraries. Annual distributions of income from
the fund must be used for the benefit of the
UW–Madison Libraries Department of Special
Collections to purchase books, pamphlets,
manuscripts, and similar materials that would
constitute a special collection.
In addition to this gift to the UW–Madison
Libraries, Louis and Esther also established a
new professorship at UW–Madison, the Fred
Harvey Harrington Professorship in History.

Diversity Residency Program:
Opening Doors of Opportunity
In 2013 the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s General Library System began the Diversity

experiences in academic instruction, reference, and collection management.
“We have the capacity to offer a generalized experience, but we also have all these specialty

year for generalized exposure, and year two takes a more customized approach. Not every
institution can offer that kind of thing.”
