GWVH takes care of Georgia’s veterans I n 1955, the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Veterans Service, Pete Wheeler, had a vision of giving the state’s war veterans a place to live when needing skilled nursing care. Wheeler petitioned the Georgia Legislature, and upon their approval, the Georgia War Veterans Home (GWVH) was established on the campus of Central State Hospital in Milledgeville. The GWVH, a 375-bed facility sprawled over 17 lush acres, is owned and certified by the Georgia De- partment of Veterans Service (GDVS) and managed by the PruittHealth Vet- eran Services — a local Georgia compa- ny and a regional leader in long-term health care. The GWVH is unique in that it only houses veterans who have served during declared war times — men and women — who have made great sac- rifices for their state and country. Be- cause of this common bond, the resi- dents have rich histories and mutual experiences to draw from. “Because we cater solely to veterans, the residents are able to connect to one an- other in regards to their military service,” says Verdine Young, admissions coordinator. Superior medical services are provided to each resident including wound care, occu- pational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, rehabilitation nursing, therapeutic recreation, dental services (routine), psycho- logical services and nutritional counseling. “Throughout the years, GWVH has been instrumental in taking care of our state’s war veterans,” says Ernie Simons, director of the Health and Memorials Division of the Geor- gia Department of Veterans Service. “Com- missioner Wheeler’s vision of providing the very best care for those who have given so much to their country, was not only realized and achieved, but will continue to thrive throughout many years to come.” Georgia War Veterans Home 2249 Vinson Highway • Milledgeville, GA 31061 Our Mission: The staff at Georgia War Veterans Home is committed to providing the highest quality care to veterans with skilled nursing care needs while seeking to improve their quality of life.
