Fowler Flemister maintains integrity in a growing, changing industry T he roots of Fowler Flemister Concrete were established in Milledgeville in 1908. Through the years, the community’s oldest man- ufacturing facility, has evolved to include products that technology and the times dictated. Seventy-years ago, local business man and philanthropist Walter B. Williams hired John A. “Gus” Pursley Jr. to work for what was then known as the Fowler Flemister Coal Company. He got the job on his 23rd birthday. Pursley learned the ins and out of the industry and in 1951 he became the manager of the business. Under his management, Fowler Flemister pur- chased a small ready-mix operation from Williams, which added to the business’s inventory and distri- bution capabilities. Later Pursley and friend and fellow business part- ner Alta M. “Sis” Ross purchased the company together. Their first official day of business was Jan. 1, 1967. Plants in Milledgeville and Eatonton comprised the new company. In 1977 shortly before her retirement, Ross sold her interest to Pursley. In 1986 plants in Greensboro and Madison were purchased from Thomas Hodges and were added to the growing enterprise.  Pursley remained company president until 1996. His son, John III, later took over. Today, Pursley Jr. serves as CEO while his son remains president. Linda Hammett fills the duties as secretary-treasurer, Kenneth Funderburke is vice-president of op- erations and Alan Deariso is vice-president of sales and technical services.  It is the objective of Fowler Flemister to be the best supplier of ready mix concrete and related supplies. Over the years the range of products has expanded to include sand, stone, block, colored and stamped concrete and all associated concrete products used in both commercial and residential building. The com- pany strives to capitalize on the latest techno- logical advances in the industry to provide a high quality, consistent product at competi- tive prices. Plants are equipped with the latest computerized batching systems and personnel keeps abreast of the latest advances in a rapid- ly changing industry.  Today, Fowler Flemister has company branches in Eatonton, Madison, Monticello, Lake Oconee and Greensboro. Fowler Flemister is Milledgeville’s full-ser- vice “one-stop shop” concrete and mason- ry supplier furnishing anything from curing compounds, sealers, color stains, reinforcing rods or wire, mortar mix, stone and sand used in both commercial and residential build- ing. Fowler Flemister Concrete’s range of products expanded over time but the busi- ness’s integrity hasn’t changed.
