ut simply, obituaries tell stories. They are the stories of a sin-
gle person’s life and in a larger sense, the stories of a commu-
nity. There was a time when newspapers were the only form of mass
communication. As such, obituaries served as a practical means of
letting people know a person had died as well as honoring the
life of the deceased. While we have other means of communi-
cation now, obituaries still provide a vital service to the com-
munity. There is a reason the obituary page is the most read
page in the newspaper.
It is because obituar-
ies are multi-faceted.
They share informa-
tion, allow us to col-
lectively mourn, and
provide a lasting re-
cord of a person’s
life.
